Each municipality in Coahuila has its own municipal coat of arms. The adoption of local coats of arms
started around the '80's as typical throughout the Federation.
Some of the most common themes in the creations of municipal coats of arms are
agriculture and ranching; these are usually represented by fruits, vegetables,
walnut trees,
fields, or cattle, goats, and horses. Most of the rural areas rely on
these for their economies. Because agriculture cannot really exist without
water, streams of water are also seen often. Education and transport is of great
importance, which is why they are also seen frequently on these symbols (torch/open book and roads
or railroad track).
More in the north, coal is visible on these symbols. Coahuila is well-known for
its fossil resources, especially for the production of oil in the carboniferous
region. Eagles are very common on these symbols. A name sometimes seen is Vito
Alessio Robles, the designer of the coats of arms of 3 municipalities: Piedras
Negras, Monclova, and Saltillo.
