The coat of arms of Hidalgo was adopted in 1989, being designed by Hermeregildo Ruiz Téllez. The municipal government asked the professor to design it and it was approved by the state government in Saltillo. In a border sometimes of green-yellow-red, the top reads HIDALGO COAHUILA. The bottom reads the motto Tierra, Progreso Productividad [Land, Progress, Productivity]. The upper-left section depicts the fruits of the land: watermelon, cob of corn, wheat. The upper-right depicts the fauna of the municipality: deer and bovine, also for cattle-raising. The lower section depicts reeds (or in some versions wheat) growing by the Rio Grande, with two crossed lances over them for hunting. On the lower side of the river, an armadillo among the grass representing brotherhood and friendship with the United States.
