The coat of arms was designed by María Salazar de Flores under the instructions of Don Vito Alessio Robles, being proposed to the council on 15 July 1954 and then adopted as official. The shield is surrounded on three sides, not including the bottom, by a wreath signifying those of walnut trees, found in the region. At the top is a knight's helmet. The border of the shield is blue and has three stars at the top; two are in a small triangle at the bottom, signifying the settlements during the time of the Colony. At the bottom, SANTIAGO DE LA MONCLOVA, the name it received in its last foundation. The upper section depicts the sun for the Revolution that started in the state over a grassland, with a row of walnut trees by the Monclova River. The lower-left section depicts a mission with a cloud behind it, signifying the work of the missionaries during the time of the conquest. The lower-right depicts a black furnace representing the steel mill industry which made the municipality prosper. In the center, a crowned shield; it is the symbol of the Count of Monclova, Melchor Portocarrero y Laso de la Vega, who ordered the definitive settling of the area.
