Description of the flag

Hidalgo County's flag can be seen on Twitter. It is similar in form to the New Mexico state flag, having a yellow field and a Zia sun symbol in black. Within the circular part of the symbol lies a simplified map of New Mexico, which itself has an image associated with the state; it depicts a sandy hill by which a yucca plant grows, mountains in the background, and the sky above. A 3D map of the county in brown extends outside of the state for emphasis. Finally, beside the sun symbol's rays are the words "HIDALGO COUNTY".

It appears the flag was adopted in 1992 for display in the New Mexico Capitol Rotunda. The design of the seal was done by county manager Tom Anderson, while county commissioner Joe Burgess did the rest of the design.

In 1975, a small Hidalgo County flag was designed with plans to send to Santa Fe to hang for the Bicentennial. It was designed by Norma Badders, who did most of the needlepoint.
