Penafiel Commune was one of the pre-2013 communes of Penafiel Municipality; it had 8761 inhabitants in 2011 and covered 5.1 km². After the incorporation of the communes of Novelas, Milhundos, Santa Marta, Marecos and Santiago de Subarrifana in 2013 it had 15 711 inhabitants (2011) and covered 22.5 km².

Meaning:
The orb is an attribute of Jesus Christ, as the Divine Saviour being the local patron saint.
