It is a fairly typical Portuguese municipal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a purple and yellow gyronny of eight (city rank) background.

Coat of Arms

Shield Argent, between two bunches of grapes Purpure leafed Vert a bend wavy Azure, on orle Sable twelve bees Or. Mural crown Argent with five visible towers (city rank) and short white scroll reading, in Bénard Guedes style, in black upper case letters "FELGUEIRAS".
Meaning:
The blue bend wavy stands for local rivers Sousa and Vizela, the grapes for the local wine (municipality within the Vinho Verde produce region) and the bees for industry and labour.
The bees are not only representing apiary, but also collective labour and persistence of the local people, and as its results the implementation of industries, a higher economic power and a higher level of living.

The arms had four visible towers on the crown and a quartered background (town rank) and the orle was different (though identically blazoned): The bees are all upright and placed three on the chief and one in point, while the current flag has them parallel to the edges of the bordure and four on the chief.

Current symbols published in Diário da República : III Série on 2 February 1991, on occasion of upgrade to city status on 9 September 1990, with slightly less than trivial changes in the previous town rank flag and arms. The previous symbols were published in Diário do Governo : I Série on 6 May 1937.

Presentation of Felgueiras

Felgueiras Municipality had 57 595 inhabitants in 2001 and consisted of 32 communes covering 115,62 km². It is part of Porto District, traditional province Douro Litoral, 1999 ref. adm. region Entre Douro e Minho, C.C.R. / NUTS II Norte, and NUTS III Tâmega.
