The history of the coat of arms appears to be unknown. The shield is scrolled, having at the bottom a ribbon that reads SAN NICOLÁS DE LOS GARZA, N.L. At the top of the border is the motto "In unum progredientes" [Progressing as One]. The upper-left section is divided into two, having (above): a label, being a symbol of San Nicolás Tolentino, who the municipality is named after; under this, also a symbol of the saint, are three hearts. The upper-right depicts a crowned rampant lion, a symbol of the State. The lower-left section depicts the Temple of San Nicolás Tolentino, with a background of the Topo Chico Hill. To the lower-right, a lit torch and atom symbolizing education; especially in the Autonomous University of Nuevo León. In the center is a cogwheel for the industrial development of the municipality.
