The municipality did not give proper information regarding the history of the symbol. The coat of arms shares the form of the coat of arms of the state, having a helmet above the shield and a ribbon under reading MINA N.L. The border reads to the sides VALLE DE SAN FRANCISCO DE CAÑAS; at the bottom is the year 1850, probably noting that year it was agreed it would become a municipality. The shield is divided into four, having an inescutcheon in the center. The upper-left depicts the Municipal Building, being divided into two and also having a water pump for the subsoil resources given to the inhabitants of Monterrey. The upper-right section depicts a crowned red lion, symbol of the state. The lower-left is divided into two: above, an image of prehistoric men in a cave painting on its walls; and below, a mountainous scene with a prehistoric man hunting a mammoth. The lower-right depicts the Our Lady of Guadalupe church. The inescutcheon has the effigy of General Francisco Javier Mina, hero of the Independence who the municipality is named after.
