Coat of Arms

The coat of arms of Monterrey apparently dates back to 9 May 1672, when Queen Mariana of Austria commissioned the governor of Nuevo León, Nicolás de Azcárraga for the adoption of a municipal coat of arms. He had began negotiations for its adoption five years prior to this. It is known that it appears no description was ever revealed through available records during this time. It should be noted it does not follow standard Spanish heraldic standards of the time, suggesting it could be a more recent creation. Over time, it has undergone minor modifications; the Municipal Regulations on the coat of arms were approved on 14 November 2007, protecting the symbol from misuse and any further modifications. The coat of arms depicts a count's crown over an oval frame, referencing Don Gaspar de Zúñiga y Acevedo, 5th Count of Monterrey, who the city is named after. On each side of the oval frame is an Indian supporter dressed in huipil and headdress standing on grass, having three white flags on each side. Each Indian also has a bow and arrow, as well as a quiver. A drum can be seen at the foot of each Indian; a group of cannonballs are also seen on each side at the foot of the frame. A cannon pokes out from a flag on each side. Under the frame is a red ribbon reading "CIUDAD DE MONTERREY". Inside the oval frame is an image of the sun shining behind the Cerro de la Silla. Over an open valley, an Indian shoots an arrow at the sun; two trees are also visible in this scene.

1899 Coat of Arms

The coat of arms changed on 30 October 1899, when the City Council ordered the crown to be replaced by a Phrygian cap, a symbol of liberty and republican principles. At the request of historian Carlos Pérez Maldonado, the council changed back to the original version on 8 May 1944.
