Coat of Arms

from Facebook

All that is known is that the coat of arms was adopted in 1981. The shield has the same form as the coat of arms of the State, having at the top a helmet. At the bottom is a ribbon in the National Colors reading GRAL. ZUAZUA N.L. To the sides are the words UNION - TRABAJO; CULTURA - ASCENSO [Union, Work, Culture, Ascent]. The upper-left section depicts an Indian and Spaniard resting their weapons, shield and club, for peace over a field; between them is an image of Santa Elena de la Cruz, patron saint of the Municipality. The upper-right section depicts a crowned rampant lion, symbol of the State. The lower-left section depicts a farmer on a field working with his cattle and sheep, representing work and agriculture. Above this is a scene with the Hacienda de San Pedro. The lower-right section depicts two children standing on the Municipal Building, looking towards the sun behind the mountains which has a trail to it; this symbolizes the ascent through work, union, and culture. In the center is an inescutcheon with the effigy of Juan Zuazua, who the municipality is named after.

Original Coat of Arms

from archivos.juridicas.unam.mx

It appears this is the original version. At the bottom of the border are the years 1863, the year it became a municipality; and to the right, 1981 for the adoption of the coat of arms. The upper-left section instead depicts the Santa Elena church; the lower-left the Spaniard and Indian in front of the Hacienda de San Pedro with no saint between them; and to the upper area of the lower-right, a hill for its geography instead of the children.
