Flag adopted 31 Mar 1959
One of several interesting flags shown on the Aviso
II site is that of the German town of Haren (Ems), click Schiffstaufe
at top of page, then select first photo (clickable) on row 6. We
see a horizontally divided flag, light blue above yellow, bearing the town
arms in the centre..
More about the arms on Ralf
Harteminks site (source: K. Stadler, Deutsche Wappen), mentioning
1959 as year of grant and explaining shipping and windmills as chief economic
factors for Haren on the Ems river and adding the symbol on the arms is
unique in worldwide civic heraldry.
Even more info concerning arms and flag on the official Haren (Ems)
website
(in German). To describe the arms non-heraldically, a blue shield contains
a six-part
figure made up of three white ships sails plus white pennants, and
three yellow windmill sails.
Stating that the windmill sails symbolize agriculture, the text goes
on the confirm the town colours: blue (representing water) and gold i.e.
yellow (representing wheat).
Arms and flag must not be used without official permission.
