The Municipality was established on November 21, 1787 when the Spanish King Charles III granted it the title of Villa by Royal Decree with the first settlements dating as far back as 1618. Source: [1]

The flag is described as follows (original in Spanish): "White or Silver demands or reminds us of the obligation to protect orphans. Gules or Red demands and reminds us of the obligation to protect those oppressed by injustice. Vert or Green demands and reminds us of the obligation to provide relief to farmers and peasants". The CoA was granted to the town of Marinilla by the "Real Cámara de Indias" (Royal Chamber of the Indies) on February 20, 1793 and the chronicler of King Charles VI certifies as follows (original in Spanish): "Encircled by his entire enterprise or emblem or two arms of incarnation that on a blue field, symbolizing this color of perseverance, reward and loyalty, are united and dressed in the ancient and original Spanish Indian costume, hanging from the Spanish hand the harpoon and arrow and from the Indian the musket or rifle; this shield covered with gold and in demonstration of its current and future prosperity and in black letters this motto "PRO RELIGIONES ET REGE MUNERA ANTIQUITATIS NOBIS COMUNIA" (For religion and the King the gifts of the ancestors are common to us; in Latin).
