The actual flag (140x140 cm) was introduced in 1962.
Shooting had already taken place in the Canton of Glarus long before the Cantonal Shooting Association
was founded in 1834. Historian Hans Thürer from Mollis GL reported the following: To encourage the
conversion to firearms, the [governing] council donated 2 to 4 Crowns to the parishes, depending on their
size, starting in 1549. This policy remained in effect until 1615. The Landsgemeinde (cantonal
legislative assembly) of 30 April of the same year decided to no longer pay the contributions to the
parishes, but rather to the newly created electoral [political] communities. Rifle clubs were established
in all these communes [followed by further foundations until the 19th and 20th century] (website).
