Municipality

The municipality of S�o Jorge (2,144 inhabitants in 2016; 11,805 ha) is located 230 km north of Porto Alegre.

S�o Jorge was established in 1930, as Ponte de Guabiju by Pedro Nunes da Silva, who lived in Canhada Bonita; he offered a plot to his friend, Father Felix Busattta, to erect a church that was consecrated on 13 August 1939 and dedicated to St. George.
The municipality of S�o Jorge was established by State Law No. 8,427 promulgated on 30 November 1987, separating from Nova Prata, and inaugurated on 1 January 1989.
