The municipality of Cotipor (3,853 inhabitants in 2019; 17,238 ha) is
located 160 km of Porto Alegre and 35 km of Bento Gonalves.
Cotipor was
established in 1892 by Venetian immigrants, as Monte Vneto. Brazil's first
dairy cooperative, Cooperative Trabalho e Progresso, was established in Monte
Vneto. Brazil's "father of refrigerated meal industry", A Sul Americana, was
also established in Monte Vneto.
The town was renamed in 1939 to Cotipor, a
Tupi-Guarani word meaning "a good place". The municipality of Cotipor was
established by State Law No. 7,652 promulgated on 12 May 1982, separating from
Veranpolis, and inaugurated on 1 January 1983.
